 Q4-Activity #1 "Binatbatan Festival of the Arts: A tapestry of culture and arts woven by a miracle"

Apo lakay of the Simbaan a bassit saved Vigan from a deadly epidemic back in 1756. To honor his act, the Naturales of Vigan chose “Tres de Mayo” of 1883 as thanksgiving for Apo Lakay. From this, it evolved to what it is now, the most colorful and important festival for the Bigueños as it focuses on the thanksgiving of our late Apo Lakay and also the promotion of our local product, Abel Iloco. They also do it with a street pageant of the Binatbatan Street Dancing, it also emphasizes Agriculture with its Calesa Parade, Santacruzan, and Karbo Festival.  

The word “Binatbatan” is the process of beating cotton pods to remove the seeds for Abel weaving. Binatbatan Festival of the Arts is one of the main attractions in the week-long festival where several activities for the city of Vigan is held. It happens during the last week of the month of April to the first week of May. As the theme of the festival states, “A tapestry of culture and arts woven by a miracle,” this festival is where the Bigueños can showcase their talents in arts, using it for cultural appreciation

Festivals are the most attracted celebration in most parts of the Philippines, as it should. Because as we are having fun and enjoying ourselves in the Festival, we are also having a recollection of our history, whether it’s places, people, products, or origins. We will always find a way to relive the important events of our history.

The Best Thing God Ever Gave Me

Being a woman is not just about being a wife and a mother. Before they become these stereotypes, they are a person, a normal human being with their own dreams, their own plans. They lived to pursue their dreams. As they’re in this process, they get to face a lot of struggles, problems that would make a strong woman. Someone that the younger generation can look up to.

But no matter what the society says, we all know that the woman who brought us in this world, the one who carried us in their womb for 9 months, the one who raised and cared for us since the day we were born. That is our mother. Whether married or a single mom, they always find a way to raise us to be the best version of ourselves, they always find a way to sustain our needs, work here and there just for us to finish school.

There are many women that displayed a picture of being a strong woman in my community during the pandemic of COVID-19. First, we have the former mayor of Vigan City, Eva Marie S. Medina, she continued to work for the people, give them their needs and maintained a peaceful and happy environment. Second, are the teachers that still continued to work during the last few years. In the 6^th barangay of Vigan City, we have the nursery teacher Mrs. Caroline B. Gascon, just like other teachers, she did her best to teach the children in the barangay despite the struggles we were facing. Third and lastly, the women inside our households, our mothers and grandmothers, to my single mom who worked hard abroad despite everything, she still managed to give me my needs and wants, and to my grandmother who still finds a way to earn extra money for her grandchildren.

What we faced during the pandemic might’ve been hard for us but it is truly harder for all the working women that stood strong all the way through. We might’ve never noticed but our mothers never really show us their feelings of sadness. They hide it because that can give us a thought that she’s just doing fine and they don’t need our help. Just to see their child be happy with a secured future, they’ll endure everything until they can’t anymore. That’s when the time comes, when we are old enough and we already achieved what our parents, our mothers worked hard for, that will be the time when we become the new generation of strong women and we can successfully show this by taking care of our hardworking mother.

My mother is the strongest woman in my life. The hero of my life. She’s the best thing that God have ever given to me.

Q3-Reflection

During this quarter, I have encountered a fair amount of discoveries and problems.  Most importantly, I have discovered and learned more about my own place, my city, my province, and especially about making my own research. Since I'm not a fan of travelling, I had little to no knowledge about the best places to visit here so at this part. It never hurt to do a short research of them one by one though, and in exchange I gained more knowledge about my own birthplace, which is very important as one of the citizens. Moving on, I will be get to know more of my own province and learn more about research in the following quarter or in other subjects.

The Youth: An Important Part of Our Society

Q3-Activity No.4 ("COVID-19 Vaccines for Children and Teens.")

From December 2019 to October 2021, deaths for all ages less than 25 years represented less than 0.5% of reported global deaths from COVID-19. There are 2% (1,890,756) reported global cases among children under five years of age, 7% (7,058,748) for children and younger adolescents (5 to 14 years), and 15% (14,819,320) for older adolescents and young adults (15 to 24 years).

On November 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to give COVID-19 vaccinations to Filipino children (5-11) and adolescents (12-17). Based on the Philippine News Agency (PNA), in March 15, 2022, a total of 1,233,017 of children aged 5-11 years old and 9.7 million of adolescents aged 12-17 had been successfully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The inoculation of children and adolescents is crucial just as it is for adults. Now that majority of the adults are already fully vaccinated we can now focus on the younger Filipinos. As we are not sure when will the spread of COVID-19 come to an end and we can’t just keep on risking the youth’s education for complete security. The vaccination is not mandatory but voluntary so it’s up to the parents/guardians to decide but they wouldn’t be able to get their child out since it is necessary to get everyone vaccinated to decrease death cases. Vaccinations are completely free so why hesitate when it’s for your own health? So that we can prevent severe sickness or death of the children and adolescents, so that they can go to school, and they would be able to safely participate in sports, playdates and other group activities.

Heroic Ancestors, Always Be Remembered

Q3-Activity No.3 (The Historical Battle of Bataan where Filipinos commemorates the "Araw ng Kagitingan")

On April 9, 1942, during the World War II, the Philippines formally surrendered to the Japanese forces. Filipinos and the allied American troops kept resistance against the Japanese invaders not until the mentioned date, when the Filipinos formally surrendered with a letter prepared by Captain Salvador P. Lopez, marking the historical day of the Fall of Bataan.

Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) then became a national observance in the Philippines which commemorates the fall of Bataan. It is usually celebrated in April 9 but if the date clashes with an Easter holiday, then the day may be moved like how it was back in 2009.

In 1961, April 9^th was declared “Bataan Day.” After a couple of decades in 1987, it was officially renamed as “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor) to pay tribute to those who defended Bataan, Corregidor and Bessang. This day is celebrated in many cities across the country with a parade of the veterans from WWII. The main event would take place in Bataan specifically in Mt. Samat Shrine which honors the heroism and sacrifice of the Filipino and American troops during WWII. The president of the Philippines will then give a speech to honor the veterans.

This celebration and other similar celebrations of ours are very much important to remember and respectfully give our gratitude to our brave ancestors, our saviors for doing their best to save our country, although many weren’t born yet when it happened, we still have a way to do so, and that is the purpose of these kind of Holidays.

Philippine’s Lenten Days

 Q3-Activity No.2 ("Lenten Season")

"Kwaresma" is what we call Lenten Season here in the Philippines, it is also referred as "Mahal na Araw" or "Semana Santa" wherewe reflect on the suffering, death and resurrection of our Jesus Christ.

The Filipinos follows a tradition that happens throughout the week. The first day of the holy week would be Palm Sunday, where people wave palm branches as a remembrance of the day Jesus have entered the Jerusalem. Then we have the Ash Wednesday where we place cross-shaped ashes on our foreheads that symbolizes inner repentance.

Christians also practice a visiting of 7 churches and recite the station of the cross which is done in Maundy Thursday or Good Friday, this is called "Visita Iglesia" Fasting and Abstinence also happen during the holy week. Most people start fasting on Ash Wednesday until Good Friday where they take only one full meal a day. Abstinence on the other hand, is the practice of not eating meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of the Season.

This season is important for all the Christians for this is where we commemorate our savior, Jesus Christ.

A Joyous Year with Kannawidan Ylocos Festival

Vigan, Ilocos Sur won’t have their year completed without their annual celebration of Kannawidan Ylocos Festival. This is a commemoration of the separation of the two Ilocos provinces.

In this festival, there are indigenous performances, religious rituals, cooking demos of the best Ilocano dishes, Saniata Ti Ylocos beauty pageant. What people usually think when they hear the word “kannawidan” is famous artists performing at night. It’s very rare for artists to be here in the province so they usually come for them and the for the many food stands.

What’s a better sight to look at other than people enjoying their time with their family, friends, and lovers? The Kannawidan Festival unites everyone and have a time-off from work, have fun, and be full together.

This Festival has always been a happy gathering for everyone and going over a year without this won’t feel right.
